Gribble Springs Cemetery

The Community of Gribble Springs gets its name from William and Mary Gribble who filed the application for the Post Office in 1885. The Gribbles left Denton County and lived in Oklahoma Territory for a time. They died in Carson County, Texas - Mary at 66  in 1902 and William at 82 in 1916. We know at least 1 of their grandchildren died while living here and is likely buried in one of our unknown graves.

According to oral history, the town had - at various times - several businesses including a blacksmith, and a general store. There were 2 tornadoes that devastated various parts of the community - one in 1896 and another in 1907.

Church and School

A church was established in the 1870s. A Baptist church was either re-established or established anew in 1896. Gribble Springs Baptist Church thrived until 2021. Springs Fellowship meets in the building that GSBC erected in 1990.

There may have been more than one school in Gribble Springs. The last school (prior to consolidation with the town of Sanger) was built about 1 mile North of the Cemetery. The foundation of that school still exists. The picture to the right would have been in front of that building c. 1934 (note the aviator goggles! Some Lindberg hero worship going on!)

Heroes and Leaders

There were giants among us during the mid-20th century when I grew up there. Pictured: Dudley Sparkman, Dan Sparkman.
